What to wear
Clothing: Comfortable exercise wear is fine for class, though not too baggy, as long or flared tracksuit trousers can get in the way. T-shirt and leggings are fine, or leotard and tights. When it’s cold legwarmers and extra layers on top are good and can be taken off during class once you’re feeling warmed up. Socks, or the kind with sticky bits on the sole are fine if you’re just trying ballet for the first time, though ballet shoes are more comfortable and protect your feet. For contemporary bare feet is best, especially when moving across the floor, but socks can be worn at the start of class, as long as they don’t cause you to slip.
Shoes: You can buy ballet shoes online but if you can find a local dance shop to try shoes on this would be best to find what is most comfortable and suits you. Ballet shoes come in various styles, width fittings and materials. Leather shoes tend to last longer than canvas, though canvas don’t tend to stretch like leather and give a nice snug fit. Most ballet shoes now already have elastics sewn on.
